Let’s look at the basics of how you use a microwave egg poacher

1. It is important to use a cooking spray or very thin layer of butter to coat the lining of the poacher itself. This will help prevent it from sticking and causing disaster when serving.

2. Some poachers require you to pour water in the same compartment as the egg but many have a special area for water. If you don’t use water, the egg will not poach and will become a very hard rubbery unappetizing egg.

3. I always recommend that you crack you eggs in to a cup or small bowl first. If you happen to get shell inside then it is much easier to fish out.

4. Nearly every microwave egg poacher comes with lids but if yours does not, you will need to cover it using a loose cover like an old microwave-safe lid. This will help keep the steam inside the proper areas and cook the egg.

5. Microwaves come with different strengths of power so you will have to have some trial runs to get the egg poached perfectly. Try microwaving for a minute and have a look at the egg. If nothing has happened try another minute but keep a close eye on it. Once you have figured out how long the egg will take, it will be much easier in the future.

6. One of the most important steps is to remove all of the water from the egg after it has finished. If you do not the egg will become very soggy and the taste of the egg will start to become bland from the excess moisture.

Just a word of caution when covering the egg in the microwave, do not make it sealed tight, this will cause the whole thing to explode from the buildup of steam. If you are using plastic wrap be sure that it does not touch the egg because it will stick. Trying to separate plastic from egg is very difficult and it is best if you discard the whole thing because you don’t want anyone eating melted plastic.
